More thoughts on Mike Huckabee...

I think Mike Huckabee's problem - no, not his problem - I think that the problem that people have with Mike Huckabee is that he was a pastor, but let's not forget that he was a governor for 10 1/2 years AFTER being a pastor for...what...four years? Mitt Romney was a bishop (read PASTOR) in the Mormon church for longer than he was a governor in my home state. Religious bigotry cuts both ways. Evangelical Christians don't see their faith as being the same as that of Mormons, and for years Mormons have tried to get the LDS church accepted into the evangelical council, whatever that body is titled. The reasons for the difference between LDS and Christians, in their faith, are many. I won't detail them here, as I don't believe that this is the forum for it. Suffice to say that evangelical Christians don't group themselves together with Mormons in the faith, although Mormons try to group themselves with evangelical Christians.

But making this simply an evangelical Christian/Mormon debate is, in the end, pure foolishness. I wouldn't have a problem voting for a Mormon, just not that one. Similarly, I would vote for a minority or a female for president, were they of the caliber required for holding such an office. Currently, there are none in those categories of suitable caliber for the presidency, and much of the hullaballoo on the left has been generated on being the "first to elect a _____ ".

Mike Huckabee would be the second preacher to hold office, as James Garfield was the first.

Back to the debate about faith, however. Will some evangelicals vote for Mike Huckabee because of his faith? Surely they will. But to assume that the large part of evangelicals are turning a blind eye to Governor Huckabee's policies in exchange for having a Christian president is laughable at best, and deplorable at worst. Such a statement intones that evangelical Christians are uneducated and are simply "sheeple", a term which many try to paste on their foreheads, but ultimately fail to make stick.

No, folks like myself, who are evangelical Christians yet highly educated and productive members of society, will cast their vote for Mike Huckabee because he shares our values, not just simply our faith. We like his ideas on the economy, we like his adherence to social conservatism on life and marriage, we like his compassion on health care and his respect for the environment, we like his sense of humor and even his awkwardness.

Supporters of Mike Huckabee like him because, as they say in the south, he's good people. He relates to a broad range of people on a variety of issues, and will make an excellent president.

And then there were TWO?

Before I heard this news, I posted this over on Fox News' blog...

Everyone has to admit that there are good aspects about each one of these candidates. Before you start getting heated, do read on…

McCain is clearly a war hero, and we can never take away his 30 years of service to the United States of America, a country he proudly fought for and defended, when it nearly cost him his life and being. John McCain is a good man, but in his age and in his bid to appease all people on both sides of the fence, he has become too moderate. Not liberal, moderate - he’s still pretty far to the right of Clinton and O’Bama (he’s part Irish, didja know?) and he would bring some good things to the table. Unfortunately, he would destroy the republican party’s chances of remaining the republican party, and getting back into the White House in 2012. Justices are getting older, and McCain may pick some good ones, but as a classic appeaser in recent years, I see him getting swayed too far to the left. Therefore, I discount McCain as the clear choice among the conservatives (again, relative to Hillary and O’Bama).

Romney is a power player. He’s a rich man - worth almost 300…I mean, 200 million, since he spent so much on getting himself elected…er, uh, I mean nowhere. I’m from Massachusetts and I’m a conservative Christian. Yes, there are a few of us, but we must apply to the government as an endangered species and appeal to them for protection. Scratch that one, too, they’re 90% liberal up on Beacon Hill. Yes, it’s that bad! But I digress… I liked Romney, past tense, liked Romney. Looking back, however, I see that he is a newcomer to the more social conservative issues, i.e. same sex marriage and abortion. Do gun rights matter to you? Then you don’t want Romney. Besides, and in saying this I bear no ill will towards Mormons, most of the country is aware that the Mormons are the door-knockers. The Jehovah’s Witnesses don’t own that practice, Mormons are required to spend one year in missions, riding bicycles around neighborhoods and trying to convert people into “The Family”. A Mormon will have a hard time running for president because of this, and besides, wasn’t Romney also a bishop in the Mormon Church?

Which brings me to the one that some call “The Pastor”. The word Pastor simply means shepard or overseer. Oh, wait, this just in, Romney is OUT. Which makes my case all that much easier to make…Huckabee is the one that we all need to rally around and select as the next president of this United States of America!

Think "FAIR TAX", not "THE EVANGELICAL PRESIDENT", and you'll see why Mike Huckabee has the appeal that the other candidates on the Republican side lack. Think about where he stands on the environment - he's a conservationist, but not an environmentalist, meaning that he believes we need to protect our environment but not worship it. Think about where he stands on education - he's for making our existing schools better, and the added bonus for conservatives is that, if we start focusing on this issue, we can stem the tide of indoctrination that takes place in our schools by bringing in more support from conservatives and moderates! Think about where he stands on the war - he's for victory, not withdrawal, but he takes a harder stance against torture than most republicans currently take. There are a lot of things that I think give Governor Huckabee broad appeal, and I can't figure out why conservatives are so afraid of that.

I see ways that Mike Huckabee brings together the best of both sides of the aisle, and brings about an attitude in this country that says that family, and faith, matter to Americans. He's not about converting the country to Christianity, as some fear, but he recognizes the good in all religions without wavering from his own. I think Democrats will come out and vote for him in the general election, not because he's a liberal, as so many suggest, but because he's a conservative who is finally taking a look at the economy, the health care system, the infrastructure, the educational system, and the environment, and saying, in essence, "We can and MUST do a better job, for us and for our future."

Mike Huckabee will make a stellar president, so I urge you to look into his credentials, to look into his real record, and to come out and show your support for him when you vote in your state primary.

That's the headline (and linked article) over at Fox News. That's right - while the mother was pregnant, she was diagnosed with cervical cancer and told she may die, and apparently the solution was to abort the children and get treatment. She chose not to abort her children - and their kicking in her womb knocked the tumor off and saved her life!

Yes, it is an unbelievable story - but I view this as a word of hope from an unbelievable God that I believe in wholeheartedly.

Never count Him out of the game, He's the one that laid out the board and set the pieces in place.

Ken and Robert over the top of the Westbound lanes of 195 in Massachusetts. We were able to make contact with about 1,000 vehicles just in the 1 hour that I was there, and the other folks were there for an hour and a half before my wife and I showed up.

Pointless Arguments?

I work full-time as an engineer.  I design, troubleshoot, and support turbine engine monitoring equipment.  At times, I love what I do.

At times, I wonder why I sit through hours of discussions about the status of a bit in a register.

And I wonder to myself...why am I wasting time on this while thousands of children are dying every day, and countless numbers of children are being aborted?

I know that my income can support the ministries that I love, but I do wonder if God is calling me out of the job that provides for my family, to trust that He will provide for my family, when I do what He has called me to do in this world.

How many of us wonder these things daily, questioning what we are supposed to do with our lives?

For me, it comes down to a matter of success vs. significance.  I'll trade success for significance anyday, when it means being a man of character and integrity that stands up for what he believes in.
